ConsumerWISE | Manage the cost of your prescription medications

Prescription medications are a large part of the overall costs associated with health care. When reasonable steps are taken, these costs can be reduced.

Consider the following suggestions for managing prescription costs:

  1. Talk with your doctor about using generic medications. Generic medications must contain the same active ingredients as the brand name and are priced significantly lower.

  2. Whenever possible, use drugs on Deseret Mutual's formulary. You can go to Medco Health's Web site to estimate the costs of your medications and review the formulary. You will have to login.

  3. Ask your doctor to prescribe the least costly drug that will appropriately treat your condition. For example, do not use antibiotics inappropriately: they do not treat viral infections.

  4. Use the mail service Home Delivery program whenever possible.
