To develop a personal health plan for you and your family, we recommend using the following guidelines. For a description of a recommended service, please go to the glossary of terms.

Your health-care professional may recommend different schedules based on your medical history.


Physical Examinations

We recommend you get routine physical exams according to the following schedule:

  • Age 19-39: One exam every three years
  • Age 40-49: One exam every two years
  • Age 50 or older: One exam every year

In addition to the above, we recommend you follow these guidelines:

Clinical breast exam Female 40 and older Annually


Laboratory Tests & Procedures

Cholesterol Male 35-75 Once every five years
Female 45-75 Once every five years
Pap smear Female 20-65 Every three years
Mammogram Female 40-49 Every two years
50+ Annually
Women with a personal history of breast cancer should have a yearly mammogram.


Colon Cancer Screenings

Preventive Service Gender Age Frequency
Stool for occult blood Use together or follow the colonoscopy recommendation Male & Female 50-80 Annually
Sigmoidoscopy screening Male & Female 50-80 Every three to five years
Colonoscopy screening Male & Female 50-80 Every 10 years


Immunizations

Preventive Service Gender Age Frequency
Tetanus - diphtheria booster Male & Female 18 and older Every ten years or once at age 50
Influenza vaccination Male & Female 65 and older Annually
Pneumococcal vaccination Male & Female 65 and older Once
If you have a pneumococcal vaccination before 65 you should have another one at age 70
