Prepare for your visit to the doctor

When a visit to your doctor is necessary, please make the most of the visit by considering these ideas:

Before your visit:

  1. Review the Examples of questions to consider asking your doctor and write down the questions you want to ask. Pick three that are most important and take them with you.

  2. List all prescriptions, over-the-counter medicines, and herbs or supplements you are taking. Take this list with you.

  3. If you are feeling too sick or afraid, ask a friend or relative to go with you who can take notes and ask questions for you.

During your visit:

  1. Ask how much time you will have for your visit

  2. Discuss your top three questions. Be sure to include your list of medications, herbs and supplements.

  3. Report any illnesses you have had since your last visit.

Before you leave the office:

  1. Agree on an action plan with your doctor and write it down.

  2. Have your doctor explain anything you are unclear about

  3. Ask who -- and when -- you may call if you have more questions.
